A pair of NHL veterans have signed a PTO with the hope of earning another contract.
A pair of National Hockey League veterans were unable to earn themselves another contract in free agency this summer and now they are looking to showcase their skills during training camp and the preseason in the hopes of doing exactly that.
On Wednesday, the Carolina Hurricanes officially announced that they had signed both veteran defenseman Oliver Kylington and veteran forward Givani Smith. Neither man has been signed to an NHL contract and instead both men have agreed to a professional tryout offer(PTO).
The PTO will allow both men to participate in training camp and the preseason with the Hurricanes but it does not guarantee that they will earn an NHL contract. In fact they can still sign with other teams around the league if they don't find a fit with the Hurricanes prior to the start of the regular seaso.
Smith is coming off of a tough season that saw him appear in just 13 NHL games which were split between the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks. He had no points with either team and finished the campaign with 18 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of -3.
Kylington also saw limited ice time last season with only 19 games split between the Anaheim Ducks and the Colorado Avalanche. Kylington however did manage to register on the score sheet with 1 goal and 4 assists for a total of 5 points in the regular season. He finished his campaign with 8 penalty minutes and a plus minus rating of -2.
This will be a hugely important training camp for both men and I wish them both the best of luck when it comes to earning another NHL contract this season.
