Two players exposed as the ones who pushed Subban out of Montreal!

Still today, fans remember how the P.K. Subban trade from the Montreal Canadiens to the Nashville Predators went down in June 2016. In a player-for-player, Subban was sent in Music City in return for star defenseman Shea Weber, who ended up becoming later on the captain of the Habs before he hung out the skates.

On Thursday, Subban was back at the Bell Centre and was honored by Canadiens before game against the Predators and this of course many pundits to talk about the blue liner’s time in Montreal.

On the air of BPM Sports Radio that morning, former NHL tough guy Georges Laraque revealed what led to Subban getting traded out of Montreal, revealing which players were responsible for wanting the eccentric defenseman to be moved. (This is translated from French):

“I’ll say something I’ve never said before. One of the biggest reasons why Subban left was because of two players. Max Pacioretty, the captain as you all knew who wasn’t able to stand him. But another player was not able to get along with him and that was Brendan Gallagher.

“When you have two players with a strong character who go to the GM to tell him ‘we don’t want him anymore’, it doesn’t help because they were two of the leaders in that dressing room.”

While the majority of the fanbase knew about Subban and Pacioretty’s difficult relationship, many have been stunned to find out that Gallagaher also felt the same to the former captain, who ended being traded himself, to the Vegas Golden Knights seasons after Subban’s move.

Subban played his first 11 NHL season for Montreal and has remained a fan favourite. It was almost perfect timing for last night’s celebrations that Gallagher is out with an injury for Subban’s celebrations.

The Subban trade will always remain a topic of heated discussion in Montreal even with Laraque’s allegations on Thursday…

“I have no control over what the fans do or what the media say. I just do what I can — go out there and play hockey and have a smile on my face when I do it, just try to have a little bit of fun,” he said in May 2010.

And we feel like Subban would say the same after his evening at the Bell Center on Thursday where goalie Carey Price surprised his close friend. They offered fans the famous triple low five.
