This could make for a very interesting trade.

According to two seperate sources there have already been some discussion within the Calgary Flames orgnaization regarding the possibility of trading veteran defenseman Dennis Wideman

First according to Ottawa Senators insider Bruce Garrioch the Flames already tried to make this deal happen but could not find any suitors at the time. From Garrioch:

The Flames tried to move defenceman Dennis Wideman this summer but didn’t find any takers. You would have to think if he was dealt Calgary would have brought back Kris Russell.

Furthermore Lyle Richardson  of the Hockey News touched on the fact that Wideman has seen limited use as of late, and while he has a full no-movement clause, he may be willing to waive it to go somewhere he will see more minutes. From Richardson:

Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman was a healthy scratch during the club's recent games against the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres. This will provide fodder for the trade rumors dogging the 33-year-old blueliner.

There's no way he gets moved at his current cap hit of $5.25 million, but the Flames could retain 50% of his salary, a move that would make him considerably more appealing. There's also the added benefit of him only having a single year left on his contract, which means the team acquiring him would be taking a very low-risk gamble on a proven veteran.

As for what teams could be involved it's more difficult to predict as things have been very quiet on that front, however the teams who have been furiously searching for defensive help remain the same, and those are Detroit Red Wings, the New York Rangers, and the Boston Bruins. It's speculation but it seems likely these teams could be in play for a Wideman deal.
