Trade chatter heats up as Edmonton explores two proven Stanley Cup winners to bolster their playoff push.
The start of the 2025-26 season has been rough on some contenders and, one of them, the Oilers now have to be keeping a close eye on several NHL goaltenders for a significant improvement in the between the pipes and to prove to captain Connor McDavid he can finally win a championship in Edmonton. Sportsnet’s Ryan Dixon provided some strong options in his latest report, most needed after last night's humiliating 8-3 loss to the Dallas Stars.
St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington has resurfaced in the rumor mill, but his early-season struggles and a 14-team no-trade list, combined with a $6 million cap hit, make a deal challenging. Nashville’s Juuse Saros has also been suggested, but after re-signing a long-term, lucrative contract, and trading away promising prospect Yaroslav Askarov last year, the Predators are unlikely to part with their star netminder.
That leaves Jonathan Quick as perhaps the most plausible target. The former Stanley Cup champion, now serving as Igor Shesterkin’s backup with the New York Rangers, could be available if the Blue Shirts fall out of playoff contention. Quick, who’s almost 40, offers veteran experience in a supporting role and could be a short-term solution for a playoff contender like Edmonton.
Quick is a three-time Stanley Cup champion: twice with the Los Angeles Kings back in 2012 and 2014, and more recently in 2023 with the Vegas Golden Knights.
Another interesting name that came up is Anthony Stolarz as Toronto could also shake up its goaltending. Stolarz is under contract for four more years, but Joseph Woll could be moved if the Maple Leafs’ struggles continue. Yet trading Woll could destabilize Toronto’s tandem, leaving the team thinner in net during a potential transitional period.
Stolarz was a member of the Florida Panthers when the club won its first champions in 2024.
Even the Montreal Canadiens may be looking to upgrade in goal, which could complicate the Oilers’ plans. With multiple options on the table, trade talks are heating up. Edmonton will need to weigh veteran experience against long-term stability, and Quick’s name might just be the most tantalizing solution available, for now. But eyes also remain out on Toronto.
