Elliotte Friedman says he expected at least one team to make a move, but Pickard remains in Edmonton’s system.
The Edmonton Oilers’ goalie situation remains steady after Calvin Pickard cleared waivers on Monday. Pickard, who last played on January 8 in a win over the Winnipeg Jets, has fallen behind Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram on the Oilers’ depth chart.
In 16 games this season, Pickard posted a 5-6-2 record, with a 3.68 goals-against average and a .871 save percentage. While those numbers aren’t ideal, it was still somewhat surprising that no team claimed the veteran netminder.
Insider Elliotte Friedman admitted as much on The FAN Hockey Show: “I thought Philly might, I wondered about Rangers.”
Despite his experience, no team opted to add Pickard, leaving Edmonton’s goaltending roster intact.
For the Oilers, the news is a minor relief. With Ingram showing promise and Jarry managing his role as well, the team can maintain stability in net heading into the Olympic pause and beyond. Pickard’s clearing of waivers ensures Edmonton won’t need to make an immediate move as he remains available internally if injuries or fatigue arise.
While Pickard may be hoping for a fresh start elsewhere, he will continue to provide depth for the Oilers.
You have to wonder what the Flyers and Rangers looked at when it was believed they had interest and what made them change their minds about Pickard…
