The Detroit Red Wings won't have to wait long to face their former teammate in scrappy forward Tyler Bertuzzi, who was dealt to the contending Boston Bruins at last week's NHL Trade Deadline after being unable to come to a long term agreement with general manager Steve Yzerman.
It was a difficult day for his longtime teammates, especially for his good friend Dylan Larkin. The Red Wings captain, who agreed to an eight year contract extension, fought back tears when talking about Bertuzzi's departure.
"It’s going to be a tough game but I am excited to see how we stack up against these guys," Larkin explained. "It’s been emotional, it’s been kind of hard to see the dream of making the playoffs fade away, but we’ve kind of gotten over that and now we hit the reset button a little bit. We are still in it. You never know what can happen."
The Red Wings were able to break a frustrating six game losing skid with a win over the lowly Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena, but things get much harder as they're set to go up against Bertuzzi and the rest of the Bruins who are threatening to break the record set by Detroit in 1996 and Tampa Bay in 2019 for most wins in a regular season schedule.
For Bertuzzi, it certainly will be odd going up against the organization that he called home for several seasons.
“It’s going to be weird. I don’t know what to think. I’m just going to go out and try to play some hockey. Every game is a meaningful game and it’s just another game,” said Bertuzzi.
“I’m just trying to focus on the task ahead. Obviously these two games are going to be a little bit different. But I’m looking forward to the challenge as well.”
The Red Wings and Bruins will first play at TD Garden in Boston tomorrow before returning to the Motor City to play at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday.
