Tyler Ennis injured on uncalled crosscheck from Gustav Lindstrom.

Ennis leaves his 700th career game with an injury.

The Detroit Red Wings got away with one on Sunday afternoon and if this turns out to be a significant injury you have to wonder if the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety will choose to take this one under review.

On Sunday afternoon the Wings faced off against the Ottawa Senators and early on it looked as though Red Wings defenseman Gustav Lindstrom might have had a bone to pick with veteran Senators defenseman Tyler Ennis. Lindstrom was involved in two questionable plays involving Ennis, the first of which earned him a trip to the penalty box but with the second, and more serious, of the two going unpunished.

In the case of the second incident, Lindstrom drove Ennis hard into the boards after hitting him with a stiff crosscheck behind the Red Wings' net. It was not immediately clear what led to the injury to Ennis, but there appeared to be two points of impact that could have contributed to an injury. The first was the crosscheck itself which struck Ennis right in the ribs. I suspect this is the most likely culprit given Ennis' body language as he left the ice, as if he were partially folded over in discomfort. The other was the impact with the boards, which Ennis appeared to take the brunt of with his head and shoulder as he fell awkwardly into the boards.

The fact that this went unnoticed could mean trouble for Lindstrom, especially when factoring the context of the earlier infraction. Should the NHL's Department of Player Safety take the incident under review the lack of a call could result in supplementary discipline for Lindstrom.

Unfortunately what was supposed to be a big and perhaps even special night for Ennis has been spoiled. Ennis was playing in his 700th career regular season game in the NHL and that no doubt is something that meant a great deal to him. For whatever reason Lindstrom seemed to have it in for him though and now he will not return to tonight's game to finish up his milestone moment.
