Tyler Myers only played 11 games in 2016-17 due to injury, so there really is nowhere to go but up.

The 6-foot-8 defenceman won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year in 2009-10 while playing for the Buffalo Sabres, but has failed to meet expectations in recent seasons.

Myers recently spoke with The Daily Courier in Kelowna about what he expects for 2017-18.

“It was definitely a tough year. I’m excited to get the year going. I’m feeling pretty good. I didn’t get much time last year, so I’m really excited to get back into some game action.”

The article also highlights a difficult off-ice year for Myers, whose wife Michela delivered their now seven-month-old son Tristan in January via emergency C-section. He was born five weeks early, and without 80 per cent of his blood as a result of a fetal maternal hemorrhage.

"The little guy’s doing well. He’s growing like a weed, getting bigger every day. We’re really enjoying him. There are some unknown things going forward, but all the scary stuff’s out of the way, and my family and I are excited to move forward and enjoy our time with him."

The 27-year-old Myers is part of a young and dynamic Winnipeg team ready to make an impact.

"I really like our group. I like what we did this off-season, and now we’ve just got to come together as a group and execute. That’s what it’s going to come down to. We know we have the group to do it, it’s just going out there and setting our minds to it.”

The roster includes electrifying youngsters Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers, in addition to new goaltender Steve Mason. Myers hasn't come close to replicating the success of his 48-point rookie season, but this is the perfect chance for him to get back on track now that he's healthy and playing on a very talented hockey team.
