The NHL’s latest move has only intensified the controversy surrounding the hit.
The fallout from Tyler Pitlick’s brutal match penalty is far from over and on Friday morning, the NHL poured gasoline on the debate. Despite the violent collision that left Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jalen Chatfield shaken, helmet flying, and ruled out for the rest of the game, the league has reportedly decided not to hold a hearing for supplemental discipline.
Wild insider Michael Russo broke the news Wednesday:
“Believe the Department of Player Safety has determined no hearing for Tyler Pitlick from his match penalty on Jalen Chatfield, who didn’t return to the game. Likely determined head was not main point of contact and head contact was unavoidable.”
To say fans are unhappy would be an understatement.
Pitlick’s hit, which became the first match penalty of the NHL season, sent shockwaves through social media last night. Many expected at least a review, especially considering the severity of the impact and the fact that Chatfield immediately left the game with what appeared to be a significant injury.
Instead, the league appears to be taking the stance that the head was not the primary point of contact and that any head contact was “unavoidable” within the flow of the play.
Of course, Carolina fans are furious, while others across the league are baffled. And even some Minnesota supporters admit they were bracing for at least a hearing if not a suspension.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes, already battered on the blue line, may now face life without Chatfield for the foreseeable future.
The NHL’s decision will only amplify the controversy surrounding the play. If Chatfield misses extended time, expect the criticism to get even louder.
