On Tuesday, the Calgary Flames traded forward Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for the signing rights to forward Yegor Sharangovich and a third-round pick. Once the move was announced, everyone thought the same thing: he got what he wanted. After all, the move came just after Toffoli made it clear to the Flames that he would not be signing a contract extension to remain in Calgary. By acquiring Toffoli, the Devils add the Flames’ leading scorer who, despite Calgary’s extremely disappointing season, put up 34 goals and 73 points, each career-high marks.

Once the trade was finalized and Toffoli was asked to comment on Tuesday night, he explained what happened with the Flames. The veteran forward was looking to get an extension, but it never came. We can’t say if he means the negotiations never amounted to anything with former GM Brad Treliving or with new general manager Craig Conroy.

When asked about staying long term in New Jersey, Toffoli said that he had the hope that he will extend with the team that acquires him. The forward told Ryan Novoziny in Jersey that the Devils and him have yet to talk about an extension, but that it’s “on the wishlist for sure.”

His comments on his desire to sign long-term in Calgary are quite shocking seeing that you would imagine the Flames would have prefer to keep him on their roster…

What the heck is going on in Calgary??
