The deal is done.

According to National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger the Calgary Flames have pulled off a huge trade, acquiring forward Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens are getting a large haul back for this deal including a first round pick, a fifth round pick, an unnamed prospect and Tyler Pitlick in return for their veteran forward.

Update: NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has shared some additional details.

The prospect traded in this deal is 20 year old Swedish forward Emil Heineman who was drafted in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Additionally LeBrun has revealed that the 5th round pick will be a pick at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, so we're quite a ways away from knowing who that pick will turn into.

Update: The first round pick is a 2020 first round draft pick and it has been top 10 protected by the Flames.

In spite of the fact that he is currently having something of a down year, Toffoli has 9 goals and 17 assists for 26 points over 37 games this season, there's little doubt about his value as an asset. Toffoli has 2 more years on his current contract beyond this season and that contract carries an average annual value of $4.25 million, a very reasonable price tag for the veteran forward.

If you rewind the clock just a single season, when they team around him wasn't a complete disaster, Toffoli had 28 goals and 16 assists for 44 points in 52 games.

An additional part of this deal that likely served as a little bit of extra value for the Flames is the fact that Toffoli is very familiar with the organization's head coach, Darryl Sutter. Sutter and Toffoli have worked together in the past when they were both a part of the Los Angeles Kings organization, meaning there's a good chance he will rapidly slot into Sutter's system in Calgary.

Stay tuned for the full details.
