The Maple Leafs appear to have lost a key part of their roster in tonight's first period of action.

The Maple Leafs were on the road on Saturday night when they traveled to Edmonton to face off against Connor McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers, but things turned sour early on for the Maple Leafs. Head coach Sheldon Keefe was running with 6 defensemen on Saturday night but he lost one very early on when Tyson Barrie appeared to be injured while blocking a shot in his own end. Barrie took a shot from Oilers forward Gaetan Haas off the front of his skate and it seems to have really done some damage.

First here is the replay of the incident itself.

The puck struck Barrie in a part of the foot where there is very little protection and as he hobbled off the ice it became clear that he was feeling the full impact of that shot. Barrie immediately left the game and went down the tunnel to the visitors locker room but to his credit he did return to the Maple Leafs bench during the T.V. timeout. Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs the veteran defenseman also stepped out onto the ice during that timeout and quickly determined that he needed to head right back into the Leafs locker room for medical attention.

There has been no official announcement from the Leafs regarding his status for this evening but it looks like he could be done for at least the night.
