Well I must admit that I did not see this one coming.
It appears that veteran cage fighter Connor McGregor, who came to infamy for his fights and his antics under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner, intends to grace the National Hockey League with his presence this evening. It is unclear at this time why McGregor has decided to participate in the opening ceremony of an event in the National Hockey League but it appears that this is indeed his intention.
Joe McDonald of The Athletic is reporting that McGregor will be in Boston tonight when the Boston Bruins welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to TD Garden. Additionally according to McDonald McGregor "will drop the ceremonial puck before the Bruins game tonight. Then he will drop Marchand." That last bit about Marchand is obviously a joke but it will nonetheless be very interesting to see how McGregor's appearance goes over in Boston.
The Irish born mega star has a rabid Irish following and there's no doubt that the strong Irish presence in Boston has played a role in him choosing this game as the one that he will appear at. That being said McGregor is coming off a massive loss, one that had an extremely high profile due to a series of controversial events that took place outside of the octagon, and it will be interesting to see how well fans embrace him when he shows up in the building.
One more thing I have to mention. McGregor is by no means known as a particularly subtle individual and in fact has made a name for himself off the back of his extremely confident, brash, and some would say unduly arrogant personality. It is for this reason that everywhere he goes he creates a giant spectacle and I would not be surprised if he uses the NHL as just the latest stage for him to perform on. It will be extremely interesting to say the least to see how all of this transpires and if McGregor boisterous personality adds anything to the event beyond what would otherwise be a relatively meaningless puck drop.
Kudos for the Bruins on this one though, it has peaked a ton of interest at a bare minimum.
