It's a very limited sample size, but the optimism is already obvious in Vancouver.

For the second season in a row the Vancouver Canucks have a young rookie defenseman out of college fighting for a spot, and for the second season in a row it looks like that player may be making an extremely strong case for a National Hockey League roster spot.

Last year is was Ben Hutton and this time around it's undrafted rookie prospect Troy Stecher out of the University of North Dakota, and Stretcher's preseason debut, one that included a goal and two assists fore three total points, wowed both those in attendance as well as those within the Canucks organization. It was also a memorable night for Stecher:

“Something I’ll never forget, obviously,” Stecher said as per NBC Sports. “First game at Rogers (Arena). I grew up watching the Canucks, coming here. It was a different feeling being on the other side of it.”

It's still very early, but the Canucks may have found a diamond in the rough.
