Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane is looking to bounce back this upcoming season and looks to be a major factor in his team’s road to the Stanley Cup. After posting an impressive 22 goals and 39 points in 43 games during his first (half) season in Edmonton, Kane looked to add some more in 2022-23. Unfortunately, a freak accident changed his plans when in November he was taken into the boards by Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Phillipe Myers and fell to the ice, where his wrist was cut by the blade of the skate of Pat Maroon.
Kane underwent an emergency medical procedure and was away from the game for 10 weeks before the top forward re-joined the main Oilrs group for practice. He then returned for nine games, recording four goals and two assists, but injuries kept putting their noses in… Kane played less games last year than when he signed with the Oilers in January 2022, putting up 16 goals and 28 points in 41 contests.
While Kane always seems to refuse using injuries as excuses for his lack of production, he couldn’t help but tell 630CHED’s Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer earlier in August how he still doesn’t feel completely back to his old shelf.
Which is making fans in Edmonton feel quite uneasy about his recovery and what he can contribute to the Oilers in 2023-24.
“There’s still some numbness and all, but I have full mobility. I feel good on the ice,” Kane said. “I feel that I’m able to perform the way I need to perform when it comes to that and some other issues that I dealt with after I came back from the wrist injury, which wasn’t great at the time…”
Kane added that his body is feeling good, but fans will want to see prove when he jumps back on the ice for training camp just in a few weeks.
