Update: Iconic 'Hanson Brother' battling stage 4 cancer.

Great news for hockey fans.

Jonathan Larivee

We have some terrific news to bring you today, a positive update on what had otherwise been a pretty sad story.

Back in October of 2021 former National Hockey League forward Steve Carlson, better known as one of the 'Hanson Brothers' from the iconic hockey movie Slap Shot announced that he was battling stage 4 cancer. The announcement was made via a Go Fund Me page and I am happy to report that at the time his goal of $40,000 was quickly reached, with fans still donating to his fund as recently as today.

Here is the original announcement:

On October 4, 2021, my world was flipped up-side down. My wife, Vicki, and I were informed that I have Stage IV metastatic squamous cell carcinoma.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) generally has a high survival rate. The 5-year survival is 99 percent when detected early. Once SCC has spread to the lymph nodes (In My case) and beyond, the survival rates are lower. Yet this cancer is still treatable with surgery and other therapies, even in its advanced stages.

I have to be honest when I read this initially I thought that the outlook for Carlson was not particularly positive, but I am now happy to report that he appears to have gotten through the worst of it. I suppose I should not be surprised given the legendary toughness of the Hanson Brothers, but at the end of the day those are just fictional characters, although perhaps Carlson does truly embody their spirit.

On Saturday an update was published on Carlson's Go Fund Me and although we do not know who made the post we are happy to report that it contained excellent news. The person announced in the update that Steve had successfully completed radiation treatment after 35 grueling days. It seems he put on the foil and kicked the crap out of cancer.

The official update:

Steve completed 35 days of radiation
He is healing and ready to begin the road to recovery.
He wants to be part of the thank you -please be patient - we wouldn’t expect anything else from him -its just like him

The update was also accompanied by a very short video, and anyone who has experienced someone close to them fighting cancer will know exactly just how much the ringing of this bell means:

The battle against cancer is never over however and I continue to wish Steve a full and speedy recovery as he recovers from the treatments he has undergone over the course of the last few months.
