After rumors that 38 year-old defenseman Andrei Markov would be signing with the Philadelphia Flyers, social media went up in flames yesterday afternoon. Today, one Montreal Canadiens insider, Tony Marinaro, is dumping cold water on those flames.

Check it out:

Ouch. Markov got the “sorry, not sorry” from the Flyers. You can’t blame them though, really. Markov, who has foregone an agent and is representing himself in contract negotiations, is reportedly asking for a two-year contract at $6 million per season. That’s a lot to swallow, especially for a defenseman who will turn 39 in the upcoming season.

So, where does Markov end up? Don’t count out a return to Montreal. Since striking out on Alexander Radulov and then finally extending Carey Price, Habs GM Marc Bergevin’s schedule suddenly opened up. Will his pocket book open up next?
