Update on Parker Kelly and Connor Murphy.
The latest on last night's scary incident.
There was a very scary incident in the National Hockey League on Saturday night, one that saw veteran Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Connor Murphy taken off the ice on a stretcher.
Murphy was sent head first into the boards by a hit from behind when he was the victim of a hit by Ottawa Senators forward Parker Kelly, although it would seem that the NHL itself felt that Murphy was largely responsible for the hit.
Murphy and Kelly were both chasing down the puck in the Blackhawks' zone and it appeared as though Kelly was thinking hit the whole way as he glided towards Murphy along the boards. As Kelly went in to deliver his body check however, Murphy turned his body at the last possible second and made himself considerably more vulnerable as the contact was made.
The awkward impact caused Murphy to go face first into the boards and it was pretty clear from his body language that he was hurt right away. Murphy appeared to collapse in on himself, unable to support his own weight, and was immediately down in a heap on the ice as if he had been knocked unconscious by the blow.
On Sunday the NHL's Department of Player Safety seemingly made the decision to not issue any additional discipline for Kelly as a result of the hit. Senators insider Bruce Garrioch indicted that there have been no hearings scheduled by the NHL following the hit, a sign that the league feels Murphy turning at the last second had a significant impact on the injury that occurred.
The good news here for the Blackhawks will come in the form of a status update on the injured Connor Murphy, albeit a relatively small one. In spite of how just how bad things looked initially on the ice, it now would appear as though Murphy is going to be alright moving forward. Murphy was cleared to travel with the team on Sunday, and hopefully that will prove to be a sign that he is going to be ok in the long run.
