USA makes a surprising change in goal just before game vs Latvia

This just in, Team USA's men's hockey teama opens their 2026 Olympics today against Latvia and have made a surprising substitution in goal just before puck drop.

Superstar goalie Connor Hellebuyck, of course, gets the start but his presumptive backup Jake Oettinger will actually watch from the press box in favor of backup Jeremy Swayman.

Earlier reports indicated that Oettinger would back up Hellebuyck today and that Swayman would watch from the press box as the team's third-stringer. It's not clear what has changed, but suffice it to say that it would be a disaster for Team USA if Hellebuyck were to be replaced by either backup today. It's Hellebuyck's crease to lose, regardless of who is his backup.
