Vancouver Canucks set an embarrassing NHL record for futility.
A bad season for the Canucks continues to get worse.
The Vancouver Canucks are not a good hockey team this season and it is honestly getting to the point where I feel bad for a fan base that really hasn't been given much to cheer for. Not only has the team struggled on the ice, but they've been led by the same management team that has failed to bring any real success to the franchise while team owner Francesco Aquilini has thus far refused to make any significant changes.
On Saturday night that fan bases frustration may have reached a boiling point when the Canucks were once again humiliated, this time by a Pittsburgh Penguins team that was coming into the game off of 3 straight losses. Thankfully for the Penguins they were able to snap that losing streak, but by the end of the game you could tell the loyal fan base in Vancouver had seen enough.
At one point Brian Dumoulin of the Penguins even picked up a Canucks jersey off the ice and returned it over the glass.
The lowlight of the night for the Canucks however came after the game, when it was revealed that their efforts this season had been poor enough to set a National Hockey League record for futility. The stat came courtesy of Sportsnet's stat department and according to them the Canucks boast a 64.6% penalty kill through the first 25 games of the season.
That number just looks bad and that's because it is. In fact it is so bad that no team in the history of the league, since the statistic has been tracked, has had a worse penalty kill through the first 25 games of the season than the 2021 - 2022 iteration of the Vancouver Canucks.
The fans in the building certainly weren't shy about letting their team know exactly how they felt about the product on the ice. Not only where the players on the ice showered with a chorus of boos in the final moments of the game, but loud and audible chants of "Fire Benning" were picked up by the broadcast.
