A very uncomfortable situation has landed the Giants in hot water.
An uncomfortable situation during the broadcast of the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft Show which took play earlier this week on Wednesday has not resulted in the Vancouver Giants being slapped with a fine.
On Saturday, WHL Commissioner Dan Near announced that he was imposing a $5,000 fine on the Vancouver Giants for what the league described as "conduct detrimental to the league" in an official press release.
The fine stems from an incident involving 85 year old Giants scout Terry Boner, with Boner making inappropriate comments towards a young female broadcaster during what was a live on-air interview segment.
"You're a good looking girl," said Boner before reclining back in his chair and laughing.
You can see the video of the moment that sparked the controversy in the short clip below:
The clip was widely circulated on social media due to the fact that many had felt it was inappropriate for a man in Boner's position to be making comments of that nature during an on-air segment. That combined with the many jokes that were made as a result of Boner's name caused the story to gain a great deal of traction on social media which I believe is why the league has now publicly addressed the situation with this fine.
"Accountability is a cornerstone value of our League – that includes both players and staff," said commissioner Near in a statement on Saturday. "In this instance, regardless of intent, the remarks are not reflective of the organization’s standards of respect and inclusion."
Did Boner's comments warrant a fine? Let me know what you think of this decision in the comments.
