Vancouver mayor admits he wants the Canucks to miss the playoffs for a ridiculous reason

Vancouver is a city that knows how to host major events on the world stage. From the wildly successful 2010 Winter Olympics to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup matches at BC Place, the city has proven it can handle massive crowds and global attention. But when it comes to its own NHL team making a playoff run, the city's mayor apparently wants no part of it.

In a recent interview with Kenneth Chan of Daily Hive, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim offered a remarkably candid take on the Canucks and the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was the kind of quote that makes you do a double take.

"As a fan, I want to see the Canucks have an exciting run and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and hopefully win in Game 7 in overtime. As the Mayor of Vancouver, I do not want them to play a single game in the playoffs because the stress that it causes for safety," Sim said.

He went on to explain that the financial burden of managing a deep playoff run would cost the city millions of dollars.

Let that sink in for a moment. The mayor of a major Canadian city, one that is actively preparing to host seven FIFA World Cup matches, is openly saying he hopes his hockey team doesn't even qualify for the postseason. Not because he doubts the roster. Not because of a rebuild. Because of safety costs!!!

The shadow of the 2011 Stanley Cup riots clearly looms large over Sim's thinking. That night remains one of the most embarrassing chapters in Vancouver sports history. But suggesting the solution is to simply hope the team doesn't make the playoffs at all is an extraordinary position for a sitting mayor to take publicly.

A deep playoff run would generate an enormous economic boost for Vancouver through ticket sales, packed hotels, restaurant traffic, and retail spending. The financial upside of postseason hockey dwarfs the security costs associated with managing crowds. Every other major hockey market in North America seems to figure it out without their mayor wishing the local team would just lose.

Sim's stance has already manifested in policy decisions. Last spring, he reportedly refused to hold outdoor watch parties in the downtown core during the Canucks' playoff run, instead directing events to locations like Oak Meadows Park.

With the Canucks looking like a strong bet to return to the postseason this year, the question now is whether Sim will soften his approach or continue to keep downtown celebrations at arm's length.
