The Golden Knights make a transaction today... is adding Kane their next one?
In case you somehow, someway missed all of the drama surrounding Evander Kane this past weekend... well... buckle up.
The now former San Jose Sharks forward had his contract terminated by the club after he reportedly left the team's AHL affiliate San Jose Barracuda to fly home to Vancouver for the holidays despite testing positive for COVID-19. Kane was allegedly still in the quarantine phase of his illness but flew home against league protocol anyways and then flew back to San Jose a week later than he was scheduled for. In effect he dipped on his team to spend Christmas at home even while being COVID-19 positive and then stayed at home an extra week... just because? Once Kane arrived back in San Jose he was informed that he had breached his contract and it would be terminated, resulting in him becoming a free agent.
Look, no one is denying that Kane is an excellent hockey player. But are all of his off-ice issues worth having him on your roster? Without rehashing everything in order he has filed for bankruptcy, gone through a messy divorce and was suspended for 21 games for providing a fake vaccination card. Drama follows this guy around like a lost puppy and yet, according to a report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, there are still teams lining up to hand him a one year free agent deal.
Check it out:
One of the teams reportedly interested in Kane's services are the Vegas Golden Knights which, if you know anything about Kane's gambling history and his history against the Golden Knights is just... well frankly, it's almost too rich to believe.
But if the Golden Knights are indeed interested in adding Kane, they now have the capability to do so after placing AHL forward Lucas Elvenes on waivers today and terminating his contract so that he can return to his native Sweden to continue his career.
With Elvenes off the books the Golden Knights now sit at 49 contracts total, one short of the NHL's maximum 50 contracts allowed per team. Could today's waiving of Elvenes be a sign that the Golden Knights are ready to add a free agent contract? We'll just have to wait and see.
I will say though that waiving Elvenes and terminating his contract is an odd move that seems to point to something else happening behind the scenes. The 22 year old forward has been a solid point producer at the AHL level putting up 10 points in 20 games with the Henderson Silver Knights this season and a career best 12 goals and 48 points in 59 games with the Chicago Wolves in 2020. He's yet to play an NHL game despite obviously earning a call up, so maybe he's just become frustrated with his situation and would rather head back to Europe?
