This just in, the Columbus Blue Jackets have traded veteran forward Jakub Voracek and a 6th round pick to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for minor league goaltender Jon Gillies.
The 33 year old veteran forward has barely played this season due to concussion issues and, as Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline points out, his career is likely over. He has one year remaining on a deal that pays him $8.25 million.
He has one goal and six points in 11 games this season.
If indeed this is the end for Voracek, he finishes his 14 year career with 223 goals and 583 points in 1058 games split between the Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers and then a second stint with the Blue Jackets.
As for the Coyotes, they acquire yet another player who will never play for them in an effort to get around the NHL's salary cap loopholes.
Voracek joins the likes of Shea Weber, Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little as players that the team will pay on paper this season, but who will never play a game for the team. Absolute joke of a franchise...
In effect, this move from the Coyotes enables them to trade a big name player like Nick Schmaltz, Lawson Crouse or Clayton Keller in the next 48 hours because Voracek's contract enables them to get to the NHL's salary cap floor. While most teams are worried about the NHL's upper salary cap limit, the Coyotes' only concern is spending as little as possible.
