Unverified speculation surrounding Hedman is drawing major backlash and reigniting concerns about how athletes are treated when they open up. Unbelievable!
What should have been a serious conversation about mental health has quickly turned into something far uglier surrounding Victor Hedman.
Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Lightning released a statement from their captain explaining his absence from the team since March. Hedman shared that he had stepped away to focus on his mental health, adding that he is now in a better place mentally than when he initially left the lineup. His status for next season remains unclear.
But almost immediately after the statement was released, speculation exploded online.
Radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge used his show to push unverified rumors alleging Hedman’s leave was connected to infidelity, him cheating on his wife and personal scandal rather than mental health struggles. No proof has surfaced to support those claims.
The backlash was swift. Critics slammed the discussion as invasive, irresponsible, and damaging: especially given the seriousness of the subject matter. Many pointed out how dangerous it is when an athlete publicly acknowledges mental health struggles only to have the conversation twisted into tabloid-style gossip.
And that concern goes far beyond one player.
“This is exactly why athletes stay silent,” many observers noted online, arguing that turning vulnerable moments into salacious rumor cycles discourages others from speaking openly or seeking help. Comparisons were also made to how speculation surrounded Ottawa Senators goalie Linus Ullmark earlier this season when he addressed his own personal struggles and how it turned into a wild cheating scandal involving his teammates.
The most criticized part of the rumors was the suggestion that because Hedman was working on issues “off the ice,” it somehow must involve cheating rather than therapy or mental health support.
For many fans, the situation crossed a line. Instead of supporting a player during a difficult period, the focus shifted toward gossip, speculation, and click-driven narratives: the exact environment that often prevents athletes from opening up in the first place.
Let’s leave Hedman alone and wish him well in his recovery instead.
