It wasn't enough for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais to take a dominant win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon, the towering Oilers blue liner wanted to send a message late as well.
Desharnais put his team down a man late in the third period after he decided to take some liberties with Penguins captain Sidney Crosby in the final minutes of a game that was already well out of reach. In spite of the fact that the Oilers were up 4-0, Desharnais decided to add insult to injury by mauling Penguins captain Sidney Crosby late in the game.
You can certainly ask how necessary those shots from Desharnais were with the Oilers already up 4-0 late, but this had been a fairly rough game up until this point and tempers were no doubt running high.
Crosby didn't offer up much defense in the face of the assault from Desharnais, and that was enough to earn the Penguins a 2 minute power play. Unfortunately for the Penguins they would fail to convert, with the game ending by a final score of 4-0.
