The San Jose Sharks have just lost a piece of their blue line for no return at all.

On Friday, the Sharks made the decision to place 23 year old defenseman Vincent Iorio on waivers, a decision that we now know did not pay off for the Sharks. Iorio was the only player placed on waivers on Friday which made him vulnerable to a claim by the rival teams around the National Hockey League and, as it turns out, at least one of those teams has indeed submitted a claim.

On Saturday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Iorio had been claimed by the New York Rangers, with the Rangers picking up Iorio and the Sharks losing Iorio for nothing.

Iorio was initially selected in the second round (55th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals, although he would only ever play 9 NHL games as a member of that team. Although Iorio did not spend a great deal of time at the NHL level with the Capitals, he achieved tremendous success under their organization capturing 2 Calder Cups as a member of their American Hockey League affiliate team, the Hershey Bears.

Iorio took on the biggest role of his career this season, appearing in 21 games for the San Jose Sharks, and collected 3 of his 4 career NHL points this season as well.

The Rangers clearly liked what Iorio was showing with the Sharks and have now bolstered their blue line at the expense of a rival team.
