Team Canada’s opening women’s hockey match against Finland at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics was postponed to February 12 after 13 Finnish players were sidelined with illness or placed in isolation. Both teams have been wearing masks as a precaution.

While the focus is on the schedule, NHL players in the Olympic village could face a different kind of challenge: accommodations. Players are generally expected to remain in the Olympic village, but hotels are available for families. Some federations have indicated to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan that athletes could stay in these hotels if health or quarantine issues arise, giving teams added flexibility as the Games continue.

However, the accommodations and off-ice facilities do look comfortable, and with the virus going on, some could be tempted to use them instead of passing it on to family members. They will need to decide what's best for them, their loved ones, but especially how it all impacts their performance at the Games.

The Finnish squad, in particular, has been heavily impacted, with only 14 players practicing while the remainder quarantine. Despite the disruption, they remain optimistic about their matchup against the United States on Saturday.

The situation highlights the balancing act Olympic organizers must manage: maintaining health protocols while ensuring players have safe, functional accommodations.

For Team Canada and other NHL stars, the option to relocate temporarily could be critical if outbreaks or quarantines worsen during the Games.

This will be something to keep an eye on as the Games kick off today with the Opening ceremonies.

Later on Friday, it was reported "the Swiss women's hockey team is isolating "as a precaution" after a player "tested positive" for Norovirus. Canada is scheduled to play Switzerland tomorrow here in Milan."
