The Ottawa Senators are expected to miss the postseason which means forward Vladimir Tarasenko could once again be on the move by the March 8 trade deadline.

And things took an interesting turn on Wednesday when insider Pierre LeBrun reported that the Russian forward has switched agents for the second time in seven months, now repped by Craig Oster of Newport Sports.

“There’s obviously work to be done ahead of the March 8 trade deadline with the pending UFA winger likely getting dealt by Ottawa. He’s got a full NTC.”

Not only is Tarasenko the most desirable trade asset in Ottawa at this time, putting up 13 goals and 33 points in 45 games this season, but also because he will probably look to join a Stanley Cup contender as a rental ahead of the postseason.

I’m not saying he will get the Senators the same return he got the St. Louis Blues when he was shipped to the New York Rangers last year, but he could get an interesting return for Ottawa. Last spring, Tarasenko was traded to the Blue Shirts along with Niko Mikkola in exchange for for Hunter Skinner , Sammy Blais , conditional round 1 pick in the 2023 draft ( Theo Lindstein ) and conditional round 4 pick in the 2024 draft.

There is chatter that the Rangers might be tempted to reunite with Tarasenko for the postseason, though the Carolina Hurricanes are also believed to be in the mix to possibly acquire his services. This past summer, the Canes reportedly looked to sign Tarasenko as a free agent before he inked a deal with Ottawa.

The fact that Tarasenko got a new agent to represent could mean that he is not only looking to be traded but is also seeking a contender that is willing to acquire him and sign him to a new contract in order to avoid free agency this summer.

Ahead of Wednesday’s action, the Senators are 16 points away from the last Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern conference.
