Waivers: Former first round pick Galchenyuk available.

Galchenyuk one of two players waived.

The Colorado Avalanche are looking to clear some room on their main roster and that involved placing two veteran National Hockey League players on waivers on Monday afternoon.

The Avalanche have placed both forward Alex Galchenyuk and forward Jayson Megna on waivers, and both will be eligible to be claimed by any team in the league prior to noon tomorrow based on the waiver priority list.

Megna appeared in 14 games for the Avalanche this season, scoring no points, and has bounced between the NHL and the American Hockey League within the Avalanche organization for several seasons now. It seems very likely that he will go unclaimed and will be joining the Colorado Eagles of the AHL in short order.

Where things may get a little more interesting is in the case of 28 year old forward Alex Galchenyuk. The former first round pick (3rd overall) of the Montreal Canadiens at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft did not get off to a good start with the Avalanche and it would seem he is now paying for it. Galchenyuk has been on the ice for 18 scoring chances against the Avs when compared to only eight scoring chances for the Avs, and is a plus minus of -3 through 3 games in which he picked up no points. The days of Galchenyuk's 30 goal season as a forward for the Montreal Canadiens now seem like a lifetime ago, and I'm not convinced that another NHL team will be interested in picking him up off waivers.

That being said he is coming off of an injury in training camp which could very well be factoring into his poor start, and if there are teams in the market for an experienced depth forward his cap hit of $750,000 is definitely a manageable one.
