Waivers loom as Oilers’ goaltending situation reaches breaking point

A once-flexible situation now carries real risk.

The Edmonton Oilers have officially crossed the point of no return with their goaltending situation.

By choosing to keep Connor Ingram on the NHL roster on Tuesday, the Oilers have eliminated what was once a clean, low-risk option in net. The team could have delayed any tough decisions by activating Tristan Jarry and assigning Ingram to Bakersfield, keeping Jarry, Ingram, and Calvin Pickard all safely within the organization. Instead, Edmonton has committed to Ingram as a regular, and that choice now carries real consequences.

The Oilers are suddenly staring at a three-goalie carousel, a scenario that rarely exists on a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. Carrying three netminders limits roster flexibility, complicates practice time, and creates uncertainty in a position that demands clarity. The more realistic outcome is that Edmonton will be forced to waive either Pickard or Ingram in order to sort out the depth chart. That’s where the danger lies.

Once a goalie hits waivers, there are no guarantees. Teams around the league are always searching for affordable, NHL-capable goaltending, and losing a netminder for nothing is a very real possibility. Edmonton’s margin for error is thin, and this is not a situation that can linger for long.

Whether the Oilers ultimately decide to gamble on waivers or attempt to delay the inevitable, one thing is clear: the safety net IN NET is gone.

A decision is coming, and it may cost them a goalie and potentially depth they’ll wish they still had later in the season.
