The KHL rolled out the red carpet for Gerard Gallant… and maybe broke a few laws along the way.
On Wednesday, the Shanghani Dragons of the Kontinental Hockey League officially announced that the team has hired former NHL coach Gerard Gallant as the team’s new head coach. Gallant is replacing Mikhail Kravets was let go after one season on the job.
And they didn’t just post a press release. They dropped a full-on movie trailer of a welcome video. It’s loud, it’s flashy, it’s dripping with special effects and dramatic music… and it’s already raising eyebrows for all the wrong reasons, with Marco D’Amico pointing out that it holds a couple of copyright infringements.
But, who cares right?
Gallant has not coached full-time since he was let go by the New York Rangers following the 2022-23 season. He was however the bench boss for Team Canada for the Spengler Cup.
The 61-year-old, who played 11 NHL seasons for the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning, has coached over 700 NHL games for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Rangers. His biggest coaching triumph came in 2017-18, when he won the Jack Adams Award after guiding Vegas to the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season.
Fans in the NHL would love to see Gallant back in the NHL, however, for now, he gets the exciting welcome he deserves overseas, with an explosive, if slightly questionable video.
