The Great One is hit with a tough question but lives up to his name.
There is a ton of excitement building up ahead of tomorrow's Gold Medal game in the Men's Hockey Tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, a gold medal game that will feature a clash between two neighboring countries in Canada and the United States of America.
It will be a rematch of the Four Nations Face-Off final in 2025 and while hockey fans from around the globe will be tuning in, some have tried to make this game about more than just the Gold Medal. A perfect example of this was when National Hockey League legend Wayne Gretzky was faced with a question about the political tensions between the two countries, a question that Gretzky handled with a class and grace befitting a man known as The Great One.
"Very simply, first of all let's worry about the game," said Gretzky on CBC's Olympic broadcast. "That's most important."
Gretzky proceeded to describe his own personal rooting interest in the game, making sure to reveal his biases.
"I'm a hockey player, I am a Canadian, I am a true Canadian, I want Canada to win a Gold Medal," said Gretzky.
Gretzky did so however not to deliver a pro-Canada message, but instead used those comments to set up the real message he was looking to deliver to the fans tuning in to the broadcast. A message of unity.
"As you said there's a little bit more tensions than normal but at the end of the day Canada and the USA are like brothers and sisters," said Gretzky. "They are gonna fight and argue but eventually you come together, and that's the way I see it."
Incredible comments from Gretzky and you can hear them for yourself in the short clip below:
