An emergency backup goalie will officially be on the bench
The San Jose Sharks have announced that they have signed 24 year old former NCAA goaltender Kyle Chauvette to an amateur tryout contract and he will backup starter Alex Nedeljkovic for tonight's game against the Boston Bruins.
Nedeljkovic was slated to sit on the bench as backup to Yaroslav Askarov tonight, but Askarov suffered an unspecified injury in this morning's warmup skate. With the team unable to call up a goalie from the AHL's San Jose Barracuda in time for tonight's game, they called upon Chauvette to fill in.
So, while this has all the makings of another miracle story like we’ve seen in the past with emergency back up goalies (EBUG) like David Ayres and Scott Foster, it doesn't quite ring true. Chauvette is an accomplished college goaltender who just wrapped up his senior season of college hockey earlier this week. He's a solid goaltender by NCAA standards and not a mid 30s zamboni driver / accountant like the likes of Ayres and Foster.
In all likelihood Nedeljkovic will play the entirety of the game and Chauvette will have little more than a story to tell his future children about the day he got to pretend he was an NHL goalie.
You never know though...
I'm willing to bet Ayres and Foster never thought they'd see the ice either.
