We now know exactly why the Islanders fired Patrick Roy

Inside details of what went down late last season.

It was one of the most talked-about coaching moves of last season, and it still doesn't sit well with a lot of fans. When the New York Islanders let Patrick Roy go with just four games remaining on the schedule, the hockey world had plenty of questions. Now, roughly six months later, we're finally getting some real answers straight from the man who made the call.

Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche recently sat down on the RDS podcast La game dans la game, hosted by Marc Denis, and opened up about the decision that generated so much controversy last spring. And while his reasoning might not satisfy everyone, it does paint a clearer picture of what was going on behind the scenes on Long Island.

Why Darche Pulled the Trigger

Darche laid out two primary factors that drove him to make the coaching change. First, he felt the team had reached a point where they simply needed to hear from someone new. "Our team was at a point where we needed something different," Darche explained on the podcast. It's the classic "new voice" rationale that GMs across the league have leaned on for decades, but Darche presented it as a genuine assessment of where the group was mentally.

The second reason is perhaps more revealing. Darche wanted to lock down Peter DeBoer before other organizations had a chance to scoop him up. It was a calculated move, not just about moving on from Roy, but about securing the guy Darche believed could be the answer going forward. Whether you agree with that logic or not, it at least shows there was a plan in place rather than a knee-jerk reaction.

One thing Darche was very clear about, both on the podcast and during his press conference back on April 6, was that Roy had not lost the locker room. "Patrick had not lost his dressing room," Darche stated at the time. That's an important distinction. This wasn't a situation where players had tuned out their coach. Darche simply believed the team needed a different approach down the stretch, and he acted on that belief.

The Human Side of the Decision

What makes this story more layered than your typical coaching firing is the personal relationship between Darche and Roy. The GM revealed that he didn't know Roy before the two worked together on Long Island, but over the course of their time with the organization, he came to consider the legendary goaltender a friend.

Darche described the moment he delivered the news as an emotional one. He asked Roy to come see him the day after the Islanders' game against Carolina, and the meeting that followed in his office was marked by sadness rather than anger or confrontation. "I didn't do it with pleasure. I have an enormous amount of respect for Patrick," Darche said on the podcast. He also made it clear that the professional split hasn't damaged their personal bond, saying the two still maintain a great relationship.

Of course, the move ultimately didn't produce the results Darche was hoping for. DeBoer's arrival failed to spark a playoff push, and the Islanders were officially eliminated from postseason contention on April 12 after a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Fans remain frustrated, with many taking to social media to voice their displeasure and question whether the whole thing was worth it.

As for Roy, he was reportedly considered by the Toronto Maple Leafs over the summer but ultimately did not land a head coaching gig for the 2026-27 season. Given that the Islanders originally brought him in midseason back in January 2024, it wouldn't be surprising to see him get another opportunity in a similar fashion if a team finds itself in need of a spark partway through the year. Whether Darche's explanation changes anyone's mind about the firing remains to be seen, but at the very least, we now have a much better understanding of the thought process behind one of last season's most polarizing decisions.
