Perhaps the most important contract signing in Wild history has hit some bumps in the road.
There may be some growing concerns within the Minnesota Wild organization about just how well the ongoing contract negotiations with Kirill Kaprizov are currently going.
Minnesota Wild insider Michael Russo was recently asked to share his thoughts on why Kaprizov remained unsigned, and more specifically whether or not fans in the city of Minnesota should be concerned. Russo admitted that, with everyone expecting the deal to get done on July 1st, there is indeed a growing sense of concern.
"The longer it goes that's always the worry," said Russo of Kaprizov potentially having issues signing in Minnesota on the Worst Seats podcast.
Russo did downplay those concerns a little by suggesting that the number of big names who haven't signed an extension this summer, like Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid for example, could be a product of the new reality surround the National Hockey League's salary cap.
"This is a new cap world, this is the first time in cap history in the NHL that we know the cap 3 years going forward," added Russo.
That being said he did also admit that there is concern within the Wild organization itself, specifically as it would seem to pertain to things being lost in translation.
"Some of it is that he is in Moscow and there's concern inside the organization that he is understanding everything that's been told to him through his agent," admitted Russo.
While some within the Wild organization may be genuinely concerned, Russo added that he does not believe general manager Bill Guerin to be among them.
"Right now we don't know, the only thing I can tell you is that whenever I talk to Bill Guerin he continues to be incredibly confident that [Kaprizov] is going to sign," said Russo.
Russo has worked around Guerin for some time now and likely has a pretty good read on the man given just how closely he covers the Wild.
"I don't think he would be that if had started getting impressions that this was gonna be an issue," said Russo in conclusion.
Are you worried? Let me know what you think of Kaprizov still being unsigned nearly into the month of September in the comments.
