Wild cut ties with Alexander Khovanov.

A short lived experiment.

The Minnesota Wild appear to be cutting ties with one of their young prospects.

On Sunday, the Wild officially announced that they had placed 22 year old centerman Alexander Khovanov on unconditional waivers, presumably for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Khovanov was coming off of his first season in North America after being drafted in the 3rd round (86th overall) of the 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Khovanov split his time between the American Hockey League and the ECHL this past season, appearing in 22 games for the Iowa Wild at the AHL level, recording 1 goal and adding 4 assists for 5 points. He also appeared in 8 games for the Iowa Heartlanders of the ECHL, scoring twice and adding 4 assists for 6 points.

It seems like this could be the end of the road for the 22 year old Russian center as far as playing hockey in North America is concerned, especially when you consider some of the challenges Russian players are currently dealing with when it comes to playing hockey in North America.

Khovanov has previous experience playing in the Kontinental Hockey League, he spent a season with Kazan Ak-Bars of the KHL, and hopefully he can find success if he chooses to return there, or wherever else his career may take him next.
