Wild, Hurricanes and Senators active on waivers Sunday.

3 players waived today.

We have 3 players headed to waivers on Sunday, although realistically only one of the 3 will be up for grabs.

First, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators were all active on waivers today, with each team waiving a player.

In the case of the Minnesota Wild we have former 3rd round draft pick (85th overall) at the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft Ivan Lodnia being placed on unconditional waivers. The 22 year old from Los Angeles California spent the 2020 - 2021 season playing in the Kontinental Hockey League and had thus far refused to report for assignment in the ECHL this season when sent there by the Wild.

It seemed only a matter of time before this move was made, and frankly I am sure many are surprised it took as long as it did. The expectation is that Lodnia will now continue playing overseas, although where he will do so is not clear at this time.

The Hurricanes are in a similar situation with their decision to place NHL veteran Eric Gelinas, a former 2nd round pick (54th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry draft, on unconditional waivers. Gelinas shined last season playing alongside Red Wings rookie sensation Moritz Seider in the Swedish Hockey League, but his return to North America has been pretty underwhelming. The 30 year old defenseman didn't get a single game with the Hurricanes and only appeared in 9 games for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, where he had 2 goals, before heading back to Europe.

I have yet to see an official announcement but I strongly suspect that Gelinas will return to playing with Rogle BK Angelholm, the team he played with last season alongside Seider.

Last but not least we get to the Ottawa Senators who have the only player going on regular waivers today, and that is centerman Clark Bishop. Bishop, a former 5th round draft pick (127th overall) of the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft has yet to appear in a single game for the Senators this season.

Bishop was injured in training camp and was just reactivated off of injured reserve, and it sounds like the team wants him to start his season in the AHL. That will depend entirely on whether or not he clears waivers tomorrow though and we have already seen a number of depth forwards claimed off of waivers this season.
