Goal upheld after chaotic sequence leaves Nashville questioning the call.
It was a Wild ending in Minnesota last night. Pun intended! After Nashville Predators’ Steven Stamkos tied the game and forced overtime with 0.3 seconds left to the third period, Wild’s Marcus Johansson scored the game-winning goal in a crazy scene in the extra frame. However, it has come with significant controversy.
As you watch the sequence in the video below, you might see that Predators goalie Justus Annunen dislodged the net and that Johansson missed the initial shot off on the cage that was off its moorings. He then put puck over the line on his second try, which was then ruled a good goal.
The Predators were furious and refused to leave the ice, waiting on official replay. In the end, the goal was reviewed and upheld.
The Wild celebrated and left the ice, but it was clear that the Predators were upset with the call. And, according to the NHL’s rulebook, they have every right to be. Even Wild insider Michael Russo posted the official rule, adding:
"Imminent scoring opportunity, net was pushed off moorings right before. This was the right call. Preds obviously unhappy."
Johansson himself even commented after the controversial win that he had no clue if his goal would count. But I’m sure he and the Wild will take the two points however they can get them this season.
In order to avoid conspiracy theories, the NHL provided a quick statement, almost immediately after the game, explaining the awarded goal, but the scene is still am trending on social media.
But I still feel like Johansson missed the initial tip-in shot and only got the puck back because the net was out of place…
What is your call on the most controversial play of the season yet?
