Wild sign head coach John Hynes to major contract extension

With training camp just days away in the State of Hockey, the Minnesota Wild made sure to take care of some important business before the pucks officially drop. The franchise has been on a clear upward trajectory over the past couple of seasons, and now they've locked in the guy they believe can take them even further.

On Tuesday, the Wild announced that head coach John Hynes has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the club. The 51-year-old from Warwick, Rhode Island was heading into the final year of his deal before this new agreement, and after the strides Minnesota has made under his watch, it's no surprise the organization moved to keep him around.

A Franchise Transformed Under Hynes

When Hynes took over for Dean Evason on November 27, 2023, the Wild were sitting at a dismal 5-10-4 and looking like a team going nowhere fast. Evason's five-year tenure had run its course, and Minnesota needed a spark. Hynes provided exactly that, guiding the squad to a 34-24-5 record over the remainder of that first season. While they still missed the playoffs that year, finishing sixth in the Central Division, it was clear something was changing in the locker room.

Since that rocky beginning, things have only gotten better. In 227 games behind the Wild bench, Hynes has compiled a 125-78-24 record, good for a .604 points percentage. That translates to 274 points over three seasons, ranking eighth in the entire NHL during that span. Minnesota has qualified for the postseason in back-to-back years, and last spring they finally broke through with their first playoff series victory in 11 years, knocking off the Dallas Stars in six games before bowing out to the Colorado Avalanche in the second round.

The 2025-26 campaign was particularly special. The Wild finished third in the Western Conference with 104 points, tied for the third-highest total in franchise history. The power play was absolutely lethal, setting a franchise record with a 25.2 percent conversion rate. And for the first time ever, Minnesota boasted two players who eclipsed 40 goals and 80 points in the same season, with Kirill Kaprizov putting up 45 goals and 89 points while Matt Boldy chipped in 42 goals and 85 points. Wild players were named an NHL Star of the Week on 11 occasions and an NHL Star of the Month four times during Hynes' tenure.

A Decorated Coaching Resume

Hynes is no stranger to building programs. Before arriving in Minnesota, he spent parts of four seasons leading the Nashville Predators, where he posted a 134-96-18 record and guided the team to three straight playoff appearances. His .577 points percentage ranks second all-time among Nashville head coaches, and he became the fastest coach in Predators history to reach 100 regular season wins, doing so in just 183 games. Prior to Nashville, he spent four-plus seasons with the New Jersey Devils, leading them to the 2017-18 playoffs and finishing second in franchise history in coaching victories.

His overall NHL record now stands at 409-333-87 across 829 games with three franchises. That puts him fourth all-time among American-born head coaches in both wins and games coached, and he enters the 2026-27 season ranked 40th in all-time games won and 44th in games coached across all NHL coaches.

Beyond the NHL, Hynes has had a decorated career on the international stage. He served as an assistant coach on Mike Sullivan's staff for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, helping the Americans capture their first gold medal since the Miracle on Ice in 1980. He was also part of the coaching staff at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, where the U.S. earned a silver medal.

With the blockbuster acquisition of defenseman Quinn Hughes and the momentum from last season's playoff run, expectations in Minnesota are sky-high heading into 2026-27. The Wild open training camp on Thursday and kick off the preseason against the Chicago Blackhawks on September 19. Having Hynes locked up long-term sends a clear message to the rest of the league: this team is building something serious, and they believe their coach is the right man to lead the charge.
