The Toronto Maple Leafs stunned many this week when they made the curious decision to fire general manager Brad Treliving just weeks after the National Hockey League's trade deadline, and only days before the end of the 2025-26 season as far as the Maple Leafs are concerned.

It is a move that will no doubt lead to a ton of ramifications for the Maple Leafs organization and one of those may have already popped up this week. During a recent interview, Maple Leafs star forward William Nylander reaffirmed his desire to remain with the Maple Leafs... but only under certain conditions.

Nylander made it clear that, as long as the team wasn't moving towards a rebuild, he was happy to remain in Toronto.

"Unless it was a full rebuild and we were going to get rid of everybody, then it’s a different story. Then you take that conversation then," said Nylander as per The Athletic. "But just to do a retool or whatever, I don’t even know, but I mean, I still want to be here, yeah."

Of course the direction in which the Maple Leafs move forward has yet to be determined with a massive void in leadership at the top levels of the organization. A new president of hockey operations or general manager could very well prefer to move towards more of a rebuild given just how poorly this season went for the Maple Leafs, which would leave serious questions about Nylander's future in Toronto.

That being said, it sounds like the Maple Leafs weren't prepared to move towards a full rebuild under Brad Treliving, with Nylander himself providing details on what Treliving's plans were prior to being fired this week.

"Brad said that he doesn’t want to rebuild or anything," said Nylander. "He just wants to retool and stuff. That sounded fine for me."

Nylander has spent his entire career with the Maple Leafs since being selected in the first round (8th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and has amassed 288 goals and 396 assists for 684 total points over his 744 game career with the Leafs thus far.
