William Nylander roasted over his effort in Game 4.

Nylander facing a ton of backlash.

There are both positives and negatives when it comes to playing for a big market sports franchise, and in the National Hockey League perhaps no players experience that fact more than those who play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs are far and away the most covered team north of the border and as a result the players often find themselves under a microscope, but on the other side of the coin of course comes notoriety, fame, sponsorships and of course heaps of praise when things are going well.

The unfortunate reality though is that things don't always go so well and on Sunday night, Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander learned that the hard way when he was roasted on social media for what has been perceived as a lackluster effort in Game 4. Now you might be scratching your head wondering why given that Nylander picked up 2 of the Maple Leafs' 3 goals on Sunday night, but it all appears to come down to one moment in which Nylander appeared to give up on a loose puck.

The incident in question occurred while both the Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning were playing 4 on 4 hockey. Nylander was involved in a race for the puck, a puck that was deep in the Lightning's zone, but almost inexplicably he simply appeared to just give up on the play. Now you would like to give the player the benefit of the doubt here, but Nylander clearly stopped skating well before the race had been decided and instead appeared to choose to avoid contact over pressing harder and trying to make a play.

Barstool Sports called out Nylander for making a "business decision."

Spittin Chiclets highlighted the fact that you won't win many playoff games with that level of effort.

Tim and Friends asked if this lackluster effort erased the 2 goals he scored in the minds of the Leafs fanbase.

To make matters worse for the Leafs forward, Nylander had a pretty bad unforced error late in the game as well which only added to the criticism he was already receiving.

Does Nylander deserve the backlash? Is it that big of a deal considering the game was well out of reach with the Leafs already down 5 - 0? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
