After a wild showdown with Jacob Markstrom, Shesterkin’s hilarious postgame comments steal the spotlight
It was the third goalie of the season and New York Rangers netminder Igor Shesterskin surely made it more interesting with this postgame comments.
In the third period against the New Jersey Devils, with tensions boiling over between the rivals, goaltender Jacob Markstrom made the long trek away from his crease to challenge Shesterkin, who was more than willing to oblige. The pair dropped their mitts and put on a show for the fans at MSG. Shesterskin got a flurry of punches in at one point before Markstrom got pushed down to the ice.
Both goaltenders were assessed five-minute majors and penalties for leaving their creases.
After the tilt, Shesterskin was beaming from ear to ear after his first career scrap, and his enthusiasm was felt in the dressing room after his team’s 4-1 over New Jersey.
Reporters crowded his stall and asked him about his fight, and Shesterskin had the best answers, especially when he kicked things off in a speech of gratitude, wanting first to thank his boxing coach, adding how he feared getting knocked out after he realized up close Markstrom’s size.
“I was just like, ‘ooh, how huge he is.’ I just don’t want to get knocked out.”
Then, he admitted how he always though his first fight in the NHL would be against New York Islanders goalie Igor Sorokin, though he claims it could still happen.
“I will wait for it.”
Oh, and I cannot wait for it.
