The Leafs tossed him out.
The father of a young hockey fan has taken to social media to share a story of how he and his son were treated during a recent National Hockey League game contested between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The father, Steven Beauparlant, is not very active on social media but it seems that he wanted to share some appreciation for Montreal Canadiens forward Nick Suzuki. Steven's son Hunter was reportedly gifted a puck by the Canadiens forward but it appears that Hunter may have failed to catch the puck, causing it to strike him on his lip. Feeling bad for the poor kid, Suzuki would instead gift one of his sticks to young Hunter, autographed and all.
That should have been a pretty special moment for Hunter, and no doubt it still was, but it was one that would be cut short by staff at Scotiabank Arena who quickly swooped in to spoil the fun for the young Canadiens fan. According to Steven the father and son were promptly asked to leave by the employees at the Maple Leafs home arena, being told that Hunter was not allowed to have a stick on the premises as it was considered a weapon. You would think that, given the context of the NHL hockey game happening at that very moment, there would be some leeway here, but unfortunately for Steven and Hunter it appears that was not the case.
"Thanks Nick for taking a selfie & making sure Hunter was ok after he didn’t catch the puck you tossed him," wrote Steven on his twitter. "He loves the stick, puck autograph & Fat Lip. A memory that will last a lifetime. Had to leave the game cause the stick wasn’t aloud."
Many who saw Steven's story were shocked that the Leafs and their parent company Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment would engage in such behavior, and as a result he was asked to confirm whether or not they had indeed been made to leave. The father would confirm that his son chose to keep the stick gifted to him by Suzuki, and therefore they were unable to stay for the game.
"Ya it was kinda brutal, they said it’s considered a weapon, poor kid had a busted lip and didn’t wanna lose his stick so we went back to hotel," wrote Steven.
Perhaps at some point in the near future either the Maple Leafs or the Canadiens will reach out to Steven and Hunter and make it up to them somehow.
