Zach Hyman gets real about the injury that knocked him out of the playoffs.
The Edmonton Oilers have to face the reality that they may be forced to begin their season without one of their most important forwards in the lineup.
On Friday, Oilers forward Zach Hyman revealed that there was still a chance he would miss the start of the season as a result of a wrist injury. Hyman, who suffered the injury during the Western Conference Final in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs after a collision with Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment, left a gaping hole in the Oilers lineup when they faced off against the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.
Hyman admitted that he still isn't clear about his timeline for a return.
"Will I be ready for the start of the season? I don't know," said Hyman as per TSN.
Although the news is not what fans wanted to hear, Hyman did try to spin things in a relatively positive manner. He framed the uncertainty as a positive due to the fact that there remains a chance he could be ready in time.
"But I'm on the right track, which is good." Hyman said. "The fact that I don't know is a good thing because it could be, 'No I'm not.'"
As I mentioned, Hyman's absence was a notable one during the Stanley Cup playoffs as he fills a gritty and physical role that the Oilers don't have an obvious replacement for on their roster. Hyman is coming off of a 73 game regular season in which he netted 27 goals and added 17 assists for 44 points. In the playoffs he had 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points in 15 games prior to suffering the injury to his wrist.
Do you view Hyman's update as good news, as he framed it, or does it leave you concerned for the start of the Oilers season? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
