The 2023-24 season got underway without veteran forward Zach Parise since he had asked for some time to ponder his NHL future.

It now sounds like he is getting closer to a return in the league with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reporting that he is likely to continue his career with none other than the Colorado Avalanche.

Moments later, the Avalanche confirmed the signing.

Ever since the season kicked off, Parise has training hard in Minnesota and looks ready to go.

The original belief what the 39-year-old veteran was going to rejoin his former team, the New York Islanders as general manager Lou Lamoriello had previously expressed his desire to have Parise back on his roster. This is what Lamoriello had said on Parise in September:

“Zach Parise will not be here. Zach will be with his family,” Lamoriello said. “We will see how the rest of the season goes. But right now, it’s important for him to be there. He’s spent a couple of years away, and so that is the decision at this point.

“To my knowledge, he is not retiring. In fact, I don’t feel he will at this point.”

Lamoriello was right in the sense that Parise is not retiring, but it sounds like he won’t be returning to New York as he leaves the free agency and is headed to Colorado.

Parise’s previous contracts at him at a league minimum with both deals with New York carrying a cap hit of $750,000. The same thing would be expected when signing with the Avalanche, though the team did not announced the financial details of the deal. According to insider Frank Seravalli, the contract is worth $825,000. He does not have any potential performance bonuses.

In all 82 games last season before taking a break, Parise had put up 21 goals and 34 points, but he failed to record a point in six playoff contests.

We want more from Parise and are so happy to see him back! Especially with a top contender like Colorado.
