The Zach Werenski saga took yet another turn on Wednesday, just hours after it appeared the relationship between the star defenseman and the Columbus Blue Jackets was spiralling toward an ugly breakup. But a phone call between the key parties may have changed the entire trajectory of this offseason drama.

According to Darren Dreger, Werenski, his agent Judd Moldaver, and Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell all connected on Tuesday in what was described as an effort to clear the air and settle things down.

The update came after a chaotic 24 hours that saw a reported trade to the Dallas Stars fall apart when Werenski exercised his full no-movement clause to block the deal. That veto sent shockwaves through the league and left multiple teams scrambling to figure out what comes next. The proposed package heading to Columbus from Dallas was reportedly centered around defenseman Thomas Harley, who recently signed an eight-year extension worth $10.587 million per season. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Stars were blindsided by the rejection, learning of Werenski's decision only on Tuesday night.

Chris Johnston reported that if Werenski were to be moved, his preference would be to remain in the Eastern Conference, with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning both viewed as acceptable landing spots.

However, the latest word from Dreger suggests a trade may not be necessary at all and was confirmed when both Werenski and GM Waddell made a statement on Wednesday evening.

Werenski is comfortable heading back to Columbus for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old is coming off a spectacular campaign in which he registered 22 goals and 81 points across 75 games while also earning Olympic gold with Team USA at the Milan Cortina Games. He has not formally requested a trade, though he reportedly told the Blue Jackets back in April that he would honor the remaining two years on his contract but was not prepared to commit to an extension beyond its July 2028 expiration.

The conversation between Werenski, Moldaver, and Waddell appears to have been a meaningful step toward stabilizing the situation. There is reportedly at least some optimism that Columbus could do enough this offseason and during the coming season to convince the Norris Trophy winner that staying in Ohio long term is the right path.
