Zdeno Chara reportedly involved in an accident while training in Slovakia

Former Slovak hockey player Zdeno Chára collided with a runner on a cycle path near the village of Beluša in the Púchov district during a training session on Wednesday, July 29, at lunchtime.

According to the Regional Directorate of the Police Force in Trenčín, a 56-year-old pedestrian entered the path of a 49-year-old cyclist, resulting in a collision and the pedestrian falling onto the roadway.

At Chara's request, an ambulance crew was called to the scene and transported the man to the hospital for examination. The participants reached an agreement on the spot and did not request that the police investigate the incident further.

"Last week, I collided with a runner on the cycle path near Beluša. It was a situation that I could no longer avoid or prevent. Emergency medical services and the police were immediately called to the scene. I provided first aid and subsequently cooperated with all authorities," Chara told Sportovy Cas, another media outlet in Slovakia.

Police and ambulance arrived on scene and determined that Chara was not at fault.

"They all agreed and acknowledged that it wasn't my fault, but it was the fault of the runner who shouldn't have been on the cycle path, was running with headphones on and suddenly changed direction, which I couldn't react to," Chara said.

"I am in contact with the runner's family. The priority is for the man to get back to normal life and in full health," added Chara.

Although Chara currently holds a position as an advisor to the Boston Bruins and he lives in Boston during the hockey season, he has been staying in Trenčín for the past few weeks, where he is organizing a farewell match to his career on August 21. Several former NHL stars are expected to participate.
