Many fans in North America awoke to the news on Sunday that American skier Lindsey Vonn had been injured in an accident during an event at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Vonn, who was competing at the event in spite of the fact that she was dealing with a ruptured ACL, initially looked good coming out of the gate but would eventually lose control and slam hard into the snow on the slopes. Screams could be heard emanating from either Vonn herself or the nearby onlookers and it was clear that the American athlete had been injured as a result of the crash.

Thankfully rescue teams were on hand and Vonn was quickly airlifted off the slopes by helicopter and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately we now know that Vonn suffered a serious injury as a result of the crash with reports indicating that she suffered a broken leg during her fall. Vonn was also forced to undergo surgery to repair the damage to her broken leg, another sign that this was a relatively serious injury.

According to a report from Sky News, Vonn is now in stable condition in a hospital in Cortina, Italy and is currently being treated by both American and Italian physicians.

This marks a very sad end for Vonn at this event, especially when you consider that she spoke glowingly about what a privilege it was for her to represent her home country at this event. That being said, in spite of this major setback I do suspect that most fans will acknowledge the incredible courage Vonn displayed by simply stepping out onto the slopes today after rupturing her ACL just 9 days ago.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
