The sports world was left stunned on Thursday when news broke that NASCAR legend Kyle Busch had been taken to hospital with a serious illness, and even more so when news broke later that same day that Busch had passed as a result of that illness.

It is a tragedy when anyone dies but Busch was beloved by millions and was far, far too young at the time of his passing. The 41 year old racing superstar had just celebrated his birthday just a few short weeks earlier and in a terrible twist of fate had only just celebrated the birthdays of both his young children just days prior to this tragedy.

On Saturday, the Busch family released a statement that shed some light on the terrible incidents that occurred this week. While I have no doubt that it was a difficult thing for the family to share, it no doubt brought clarity to millions of racing fans who were left in total shock at the unexpected news of Busch's passing.

From the Busch family:

The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications.

The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time.

Busch was considered to be among the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time and holds numerous records in the sport. He is a two-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion having won the prestigious title in 2015 and 2019, a NASCAR Nationwide Champion having captured that title in 2009 and a two-time NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Champion having achieved those in 2018 and 2019.

No man has more wins in NASCAR than Busch who is credited with 234 career wins, a staggering accomplishment to put it mildly.

Bush was more than just a NASCAR driver however and had a huge impact on many, many, families thanks to the foundation he built with the help of his wife Samantha, the Samantha and Kyle Busch Bundle of Joy Fund. They started the foundation after their own struggles to start a family, looking to help other families avoid the same pain that they experienced.

Kyle and Samantha struggled to start a family and went through several rounds of in vitro fertilization in order to have their children, 11 year old Brexton and 4 year old Lennix. This came after several failed pregnancies and miscarriages, leading to the couple becoming strong advocates for IVF.

Kyle Busch cared deeply for his fans as well, as many, many videos that have been shared on social media in response to the terrible news clearly show.

The Carolina Hurricanes showed great class this week when they paid tribute to Busch prior to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final.

The sports world lost a good man this week, my condolences go out to all of those who have been touched by this terrible tragedy.
